Based on a true story, The White Rose is the name of the only documented group of German anti-Nazi student activists during World War II. The play begins in May 1942 when Sophie Scholl joins her beloved brother Hans, a medical student/soldier for the Third Reich, at the University of Munich. He and fellow student/soldiers Alexander Schmorell, Christoph Probst, Wilhelm Graf, and Hans' girlfriend, Traute Lafrenz, are a devoted group of young intellectuals who are appalled by Hitler and the Nazis. Soon after Sophie's arrival, leaflets denouncing Hitler begin to appear in Munich and other cities in Europe. It doesn't take Sophie long to discover that Hans and his friends are the creators of this planned campaign to inform Germans of the evil of the Third Reich, and exhorting them to resist. Young, idealistic, naive, passionate, these students were courageous in their struggle against overwhelming odds. Though it has been more than sixty years since the heroic acts of The White Rose, the issues of truth and freedom for which they fought remain relevant and current.

At the intermission, hear an interview with Pastor James A. Bartos, Holy Trinity Church, Charlotte, NC
