One of the classic literary genres fully developed in the 20th century was that of the murder mystery; we need look no further than Dame Agatha Christie to learn about the rules of the game. She is the world’s best-known mystery writer and the best-selling fiction author of all time, with an estimated two billion sold copies of her work, a billion copies in English and another billion translated into over 45 other languages.
Christie (1890-1976) was actually a rather shy woman who shunned publicity, but whose mind was always churning with ideas for memorable heroes and villains. These spilled into 80 novels and short story collections, as well as over 12 plays, including And Then There Were None.
The carefully plotted And Then There Were None, with its gallery of colorful and suspicious characters, is arguably one of the finest mysteries ever written. Part of Christie’s “formula” is always to go beyond the obvious, and in this play she plumbs the realm of group psychology to examine the effect of guilt and to ask the difficult question of what constitutes justice in a seemingly unjust world.
This complex production, faithful to Christie’s original stage presentation and intent, would not have been possible without the hard work of a very talented cast and visionary production team, and the help of many individuals from the Lincoln Theatre Guild, Lincoln Cultural Center, and the community. We hope you enjoy the fruits of our labors, and are ready to ponder Christie’s perennial question: “Whodunit?!”
